Labor Committee Report

The newly reconstituted CA DSA Labor Committee met in June with eleven comrades in attendance from five chapters. Our new co-chairs are Sam C and Leah LP. After introductions and brief reports on the chapters’ labor activities, the group agreed on three priority areas for the initial work of the committee: solidarity, salting, and education and training.

A number of committee members are already working in these areas. In terms of solidarity, we heard from comrades about collective bargaining that may lead to strikes in the University of California and California State University systems; the upcoming UPS strike deadline; and work occurring toward the formation of a CA DSA Amazon solidarity committee.

Salting has been taking place for the past couple years by DSA members across a number of industries and workplaces. The Labor Committee supported a statewide zoom meeting on the topic last year, and will continue to support this work going forward.

We agreed that the new CA DSA website would be a great place to lodge tested curricula developed by the chapters on appropriate topics (e.g., organizing workshops, labor history study groups, etc.) and a couple committee members volunteered to begin collecting the materials from the chapters to make this happen.

If you are a union member interested in statewide aspects of DSA’s labor work, please contact your chapter’s state council representatives to make the connection before our next meeting.
